about

1987 (or was it '88?) i came back from America. I had a hit in the States with my best shot. Pat Benatar had a major hit was a cover of my band's song, All Fired Up, written by Kerryn Tolhurst. It had been a heady year. I had come off the road after 6 weeks singing back up vocals with Australian Crawl on their last tour. Kerryn (one of my musical heroes) and I went into the studio and recorded All Fired Up which was released on a new indie label started by Moira Bennet called Mighty Boy. I had moved to Sydney, met my future wife and the record started taking off.

I am trying to be accurate here but time plays tricks on the mind. They say if you can remember the sixties you weren't there, if you can remember the eighties, you need to see a psychologist.

So, All Fired Up is unavailable to buy despite saturation publicity, television appearances and high rotation on every radio station in the country due to a fuck up at the record pressing plant. It stalls in the lower reaches of the charts.

Long story short... Somehow Pat Benater hears it and records her version. It takes off worldwide. Kerryn and i go to New York and find ourselves a manager. He was a mover and shaker, Bob Ellis. He had been married to Diana Ross, managed Afrika Bambaataa and the Average White Band and knew who to call. Bob loved the songs. He paid for our rehearsals, organised a couple of gigs and set up a showcase gig and invited every major record company, who all turned up. For reasons i will not be going into here...(saving it for the book) only two small companies made offers. I had to leave for financial reasons after six months. I was broke. Kerryn stayed and became a successful producer and writer.

Side note, the wonderful Ivan Kral was in our American band R.I.P. and we picked up a young unknown bass player, Tony Shanahan, who has since built an amazing career with Patti Smith and other luminaries.

I came home broke and lost. Somehow a young producer name Neil Jensen was steered in my direction and we set about making this album you are presumably holding. It was recorded on a budget of nothing, writing most of the songs as we went, in a studio that was being built as we recorded. i don't know where it was or who the engineer was. (it was a long time ago). All i can remember is Neil played all the instruments except for one unaccredited organ solo (played by someone mildly famous who was paid in cash for contractual reasons). My friend Drew Campbell added the brilliant harmonies and i sang and played harp. It was almost released by an indie label that went broke two weeks before release in a flurry of cocaine and lawsuits. One of the songs was almost covered by Wendy Matthews. My manager John Arthus from Sydney band Ward 13 almost got me a tour... i should have called the album "Almost"

Anyway, here it is, Everything you love and hate about the eighties in one place.
